Lot-et-Garonne is an area of fruits, vegetables and hazel nuts, but it offers also an abundance of vineyards (Bergerac, Marmandais, Duras, Mombazillac, Pecharmant...) and products such as
Armagnac... It has also an exceptionel climate, a friendly welcome and what we call:
la douceur de vivre. From May to October many towns and villages come alive with special events such as music, theatre, dance and song (eg. in August: The Festival of Street Art in Miramont de Guyenne). Beside the bastides and beautiful scenery, there are colourful local markets every day of the week somewhere; for example in Miramont de Guyenne on Monday and in Eymet (6 KM) on Thursday all through the year.
In July and August in Miramont, Eymet and many of the villages around don't miss the famous night-time farmers markets where you can buy local produce to be enjoyed on large tables in the village market places . You'll meet all kinds of people, french and foreigners, resident or on holiday.
Castillonnès, Monflanquin, Puymirol, Tournon d'Agenais, Vianne, Villeneuve-sur-Lot, Villeréal... and many others. From the XIIth to the XIVth century many
bastides have been built by the English or French lords for social and economic reasons, to attract people to places of safety, and assure their control on the valleys.
As opposed to the usual tortuous lanes of the period, the streets are aligned according to a geometrical design round a central square where all the shops are concentrated.
Duras, Biron, Bourdelle, Bonaguil... Originally fortresses, most of them have been transformed by the end of the XVIIIth century to comfortable residences and even to places of leisure. The different parts of their architecture testify to the succesive styles during this long period.
Besides the 42
bastides and 1500
pigeonniers, the Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne are internationally renowned for their prehistoric sites (Lascaux and Rouffignac), centred on the Vézère and Dordogne valleys, for Roman remains (the Roman site of Vesunna) and underground caves (Lastoumelles, Fontinou-Castella).
an unspoilt Tuscany or Provence and the countryside alone deserves a visit. It can be appreciated by car, of course, but also by enjoying some of the 450 Km of cycle routes, of the 200 Km of waterways or one of the innumerable foot paths.
